Iyashikei (‘healing’) anime is often characterized by slow moving plots, episodes driven purely by character interaction, and a world immersed in serenity. Examples include Aria, Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, and Sketchbook. The subject of iyashikei anime has been thoroughly addressed in the literature anime blogosphere. Just looking through the results page on Google for the term, there’s already a lot written. For in depth analysis of the genre, I’ll refer you to A Presentation of Iyashikei Series and Their Effects and A Moment of Stillness: the Appeal of Iyashkei.
I was recently asked as to what is the appeal of these slow moving shows I liked. The show in question (Natsume Yuujinchou) doesn’t strictly fall into the category, it has the same central appeal. For more on Natsume Yuujinchou, see Aorii’s excellent article: Natsume Yuujinchou and the Path of Enlightenment.
