PAX East: Tales from the Show Floor

On the weekend of the 11th of March, I was at Penny Arcade Expo: East in Boston, MA. It’s a huge video game convention attended by over 69K people. I’m going to split up my PAX East posts into two sections: impressions of some of the games I saw on the show floor and some of the panels and events I went to.

And so here is part 1: Tales from the Show Floor. A lot more patient people than I have covered the popular games, so I’d like to tell you about some of the smaller booths that I got to visit.

Touhou + Saturn Valley?!

This morning, I was informed of this 12 Days of Anime project that Canon’s blog started. This is a project where people do a daily blog for the next twelve days relating primarily to anime topics. I’ve been intending to do a wrapup post on the recent EB Fanfest, but that’ll be saved for later this week. Looking at my blog, I haven’t actually written a lot related to anime. My twelve days will probably be split between anime and gaming related topics. I tend to find myself caught somewhere in between the two overlapping cultures. For those new to my blog, and since this is a new blog, I can be found on Twitter and this is my MAL profile.

I guess I’ll open by talking about a project that has been a hobby of mine for a while now: game development of a Touhou fangame.

[#ebff] Building a Sound Stone

In this post, I’ll be talking about building a Sound Stone as a project for the EarthBound Fanfest. In EarthBound, the Sound Stone is a device that Ness is given at the beginning of the game. He uses it to collect the melodies of the eight Your Sanctuary locations that give him the power to defeat the cosmic evil Giygas.

This is primarily a documentation for those who would be interested in building one of these. The source code for the project is available here for anyone to use and modify.
